The Hasty Team has strived to maintain a high level of fitness and skill proficiencies. Each specialty within the Team has a written, Sheriff's Office approved (P.O.S.T), set of standards to which they train and test. Each specialty also requires that members pass a biannual fitness test to remain active in that specialty.
Each specialty conducts frequent training on rescue skills and the use of state-of-the-art rescue equipment associated with that specialty to keep skills high. Because of this extensive training and testing, members are asked to declare an interest in one specialty and to seek proficiency in that specialty. All members are encouraged to participate in all other specialties within the Team, but by requiring proficiency in at least one the Team hopes to maintain high skills within each specialty.
The team as a whole trains on a weekly basis, while more specialized components train more often as their particular specialties dictate. The Hasty Team is trained and equipped to NFPA 1670 at the Backcountry SAR Technician, Swiftwater SAR Operations, High Angle/Low Angle Technical SAR Operations and Dive Rescue/Recovery SAR Operations level. These personnel may be called to assist other agency technical rescue teams with complex incidents.
All team members are required to attain qualification as a SAR Technician-Basic within 6 months of appointment to the Team. Bi-Annual medical, physical fitness, and skills currency requirements are also required to maintain qualification. All personnel are trained and function under the auspices of the Incident Command System and NIMS. The Washoe County Sheriff's Office SAR Duty Officers are all public safety officials with extensive search management and operations experience.
