An Introductory/Basic Training Academy for Public Safety Divers
& Shore Support Personnel

September 25 – 27,  2009

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Hasty Team invites you to attend this unique hands-on dive academy providing an introduction and basic skill set for Public Safety Divers.  In addition to the formal training, you will meet and share ideas with Public Safety Divers from many different agencies.  Participants will receive both classroom and practical dive or shore support training though-out the two and a half day academy.

Locations:

  • Friday, September 25 - Regional Public Safety Training Center
    5190 Spectrum Boulevard, Reno, NV 89512
    6:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, September 26 - Sand Harbor, Lake Tahoe State Park, NV
    8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, September 27 – Sparks Marina, Sparks, NV
    8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Class room topics include:

  • Introduction to Public Safety Diving and Team Structure
  • Equipment/Tools
  • Diver/Tender Signals
  • Search Pattern Usage
  • Search Options
  • Dive Medical

Field instructive training and drills will include:

  • Dressing Divers for Rescue
  • Full Face Mask – Types and Usage
  • Quick Entry Public Safety Dive Equipment – Types and Usage
  • Shore Supported Search Patterns
  • Dive Tender / Shore Support Training
  • Circle Patterns with single diver and multiple divers
  • Lift Bag usage and operation
  • Backup / Rescue Diver drills

Divers will experience both clear and black water dives in a controlled environment and will learn the skills needed to be effective and safe public safety divers.  All dives will be at altitude.  Dives will be supported by boat operations and will be overseen by on-site medical personnel.

You will receive:

  • 18 + hours of training with instructor to student ratios of at least one instructor for every two students
  • Complete training materials including sample dive unit classifications, protocols, dive logs and diver / shore support check lists.
  • Long Sleeve Dive Academy Tee Shirt
  • Upon completion of all dives – a graduation certificate.

Who Can Attend?
Shore Support and Dive Personnel involved in public safety diving with a governmental agency.  Each participant needs to meet the following requirements:

  • Divers must hold a minimum certification as a PADI Rescue Diver (or equivalent from another recognized agency such as NAUI, SSI, etc.)  (This requirement does not apply to persons attending as shore support only.)
  • Be physically able to participate in 2 days of strenuous dive / shore support activity.
  • Complete all paperwork for registration including registration form and medical questionnaire (signed by a physician if necessary).
  • Must be a current and active member of a public safety agency or rescue team involved in dive rescue / recovery.  (Verification of this affiliation will be required.)

What equipment is needed?
Each participant is required to have the following equipment:

  • Divers
    • All needed SCUBA equipment including:
      • Regulator, pressure gauge, depth gauge, etc.
      • Minimum of one cutting tool on equipment (recommended two or three)
      • Mask, fins, Whistle or other signaling device.
      • BCD
      • Exposure protection for 39 degree water (recommend dry suit, however use a wet suit if you are not trained in dry suit operation).  Hood and gloves are a must.
      • Weight Belt (our sponsor Sierra Dive center will provide weights at no charge for those participants flying in – but call now to reserve gear as the shop will be busy that weekend and may run out)
      • Minimum of two tanks per person (our sponsor Sierra Dive center will provide tanks at no charge for those participants flying in – but call now to reserve gear as the shop will be busy that weekend and may run out).
      • Any other standard gear your department uses (harness, redundant secondary air source, etc.)
  • Shore Support Personnel
    • PFD with knife and whistle
    • Sun and weather protection
    • Any other standard gear your department uses (window punches, slate boards, throw bags, etc.)

Other recommended equipment:

  • Sun block
  • Clothes for every condition (the weather changes fast here)
  • Sturdy shoes (you will be climbing rocks)

Cost / Maximum Attendance
If registration and money is received prior to September 1 - $110 per participant
If registration and money is received after September 1 - $135 per participant

MAXIMUM ENROLLMENT:  We are limiting the academy to 35 participants (24 divers and 11 shore support) on a first come-first served basis.

MINIMUM ENROLLMENT:  If we do not have at least 10 persons total enrolled and paid by September 1, the Hasty Team reserves the right to cancel the Academy and all registration fees will be refunded. 


Lodging, Food and Entertainment
Participants should plan on staying in Reno for a minimum of two nights. Because the academy is scheduled before the major tourist season, you should be able to find rooms at a reasonable rate. Here are a few ideas:

Lunch will be provided on Saturday. All other meals will be the participant’s responsibility. Sunday, we will all go out for pizza after the last dive, so please plan your budget accordingly.

Travel
If you plan on flying or driving over a pass, please be aware our last dive will be completed on Sunday by about 1:00 p.m.  We will be diving Sunday at 4500 ft elevation with a maximum depth of 60 feet.  Please plan to have lunch and/or an appropriate surface interval before departing home.

Ground Transportation
You need to have ground transportation as we will be moving from location to location each day. 

About the Washoe County Sheriff’s Hasty Team and Your Instructors

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Hasty Team has one of the longest standing dive units in the West. Started in 1978 the team now has over 45 rescue members covering seven technical rescue disciplines, including 18 public safety divers.  The experience of the primary instructors for this training average over 10 years each of public safety diving and the majority are PADI professionals (Divemasters and Instructors) or are PADI Master Divers and are team leaders the Hasty Team’s Dive Unit.  For more information regarding the Hasty Team click here to find out more.
